What police are calling a “zero-tolerance” initiative last month yielded drug charges, a slew of tickets for alcohol, trespassing and driving offences plus the arrest of four people wanted on outstanding warrants.
A total of 78 criminal charges were laid, including 17 drug charges and officers handed out 143 tickets, police said.
The week-long blitz focused on Rideau and George streets between Sussex Drive and Cumberland Street, including the Waller Street Mall, and included help from OC Transpo special constables.
Staff-Sgt. Sam Fawaz called the results “impressive” and said they were tackling concerns raised by officers on the beat and people who live, work and own businesses in the neighbourhood.
Officers got positive comments and thanks for their efforts, which set the tone for the summertime Lowertown foot patrol program that kicked off this month, Fawaz said.
Both initiatives are part of an emphasis on having officers on foot visible in the core.
