If you were thinking of hitting Petrie Island East Bay beach today to beat the heat, don’t.

The City of Ottawa issued its first no-swim advisory for the season for the facility, as the temps are expected to rise to 28 C, or 32 C with the humidity factored in.

Samples taken at the beach measured 529 E. coli particles per 100 ml of water, according to information on the city’s website.

“When elevated levels of E.coli are detected in the water, it is probable that other organisms – which can pose a risk to your health – are likely present.”

Red flag advisories are issued whenever sample readings exceed 200 E. coli particles per 100 ml of water.

However, the city’s four other beaches — Britannia, Mooney’s Bay, Westboro and Petrie Island River — are flying the green flag for swimmers. Gatineau beaches are also open.

Saturday is expected to be bring a mix of rain and thunderstorms and a high of 23 C with a 66-per-cent chance of rain.
