YMCA-YWCA childcare workers have reached a tentative deal after a one-day strike, said the union late Tuesday night.
Local 2204 of CUPE said in a tweet that a ratification vote is set for Wednesday after 40 striking childcare workers at three YMCA-YWCA daycare centres closed down operations for one day in a dispute over contract wages and pensions.
The union’s 300 members all work in Eastern Ontario daycares, but the 40 who were on strike joined the union recently and their contract had lower pay than longer-term union members — by $8,000 to $12,000 a year, said union president Athina Basiliadis — and no pension.
The union wanted to bring the 40 strikers in line with the rest of the local’s members. Currently they earn between $15 and $18 an hour.
The details of the new deal were not immediately known.
The three daycares affected by the strike were the Taggart Family Y on Argyle Avenue in Centretown, and the Ruddy Family Y and Avalon Public School, both in Orléans. The three centres together have 229 children.
