The Ottawa police are investigating the death of a woman who was found deceased in her cell overnight at the Ottawa-Carleton Detention Centre.

Details about the woman’s death are scarce, however, it’s believed the woman’s death was medical-related.

The death, which happened sometime overnight between July 19 and 20, turns up the intensity of the spotlight that is already shining on the beleaguered Innes Road facility. Reports of overcrowding, forcing some inmates to sleep in showers and substandard health care that saw a baby born on the floor of a segregation cell have plagued the facility in the recent past.

Earlier this month, a mentally ill former inmate filed a lawsuit alleging he was thrown in a segregation cell following a beating by correctional officers that the jail’s own superintendent acknowledged was excessive.

More to come.
