The two do-not-miss shows this week are utterly different, and thankfully not on the same night.
Vancouver’s Polaris Prize-shortlisted rock band Black Mountain play Zaphod Beeblebrox on Friday, exhausted after spending weeks on tour. (“We’re no longer 24 years old,” said drummer Joshua Wells, who’s turning 41 this month, “but whenever we get on stage, that all goes away.”) It’s the third nomination and second time shortlisted for the eclectic, nu-classic rock band, who have done something alchemical with their latest album, IV, that they almost called it ‘Our Strongest Material to Date.’
It veers from atmospheric, AC/DC-reminiscent rock to dark space-pop, fronted always with the distinctive voice of Amber Webber, showcasing each musician’s skill without becoming an intellectual effort: it’s become a must-play in my house. Even up against the likes of Andy Shauf, PUP and Coeur de Pirate, and insisting “For better or worse, we aren’t industry players”, the prize might be in sight for them. (And a quick vacation by the lake in August, before heading off to Australia and back to Europe.)
Percussionist John Colpitts, aka Man Forever, is opening their show, playing his relentless, 30-minute piece The Clear Realization, with Noah Hecht on snare and Max Almario on bongos — with the real possibility Wells may sit in. July 22, 8:45 p.m., Zaphod’s. $18. spectrasonic.com
If Colpitts is still around on Tuesday, Norwegian dark metal band Mork could probably use his help: their drummer Lucass has had to stay behind, so the band are going to use pre-recorded drum tracks for their shows. “We have been waiting to come over [to Canada], so nothing is going to keep us from performing now,” said leader Mork Halden.
The band, created in homage to other Norwegian groups Darkthrone and Buzum — Darkthrone’s Nocturno Culto recently contributed to Mork’s latest album, Den Vandrenda Skygga (The Wandering Shadow) — has had a longstanding relationship with a Canadian label, but has yet to play here. This tour begins on July 21 in Sherbrooke. July 26, with Morgue, Svalbard, 8:30 p.m., House of Targ. $15 at the door. houseoftarg.com
The other must-see show is headlined by folk-pop band Beirut, aka Zach Condon, his ukelele and friends. Beirut released its happiest, poppiest and utterly enjoyable French-tinged album, NO NO NO, last year. But the person who makes this bill is Montreal’s Little Scream, aka Laurel Sprengelmeyer of the surprising soprano, whose much-anticipated album, Cult Following, comes out the day before her show here.
The 12-song collection solidly moves her out of the folk category and into something mpore arty, synthy and sometimes dance-y (did you see that must-have jacket in her photo?). It’s almost a concept album, best played from start to finish, feeling like an exploration of the self in a relationship, from disco delight to dreamy, sleepless bemusement. July 26, 7 p.m., Algonquin Commons Theatre. $35-$40. spectrasonic.com
A few days earlier, American musical scientist Ruban Nielson, aka Unknown Mortal Orchestra, plays his experimental, synth-pop, jazz-infused creations off his 2015 album Multi-Love, almost documenting the friction of his first polyamorous relationship. It’s a tricky album, with psych-pop songs and ballads that are so catchy — he once described them as super-fi instead of lo-fi — it’s easy to miss the delightful, produced easter eggs. July 23, with Klaus Johann Grobe, 9 p.m., Zaphod’s. $18. spectrasonic.com
Chamberfest starts Thursday and runs to Aug. 3, offering the usual classical repertoire and some quirky shows, including some free outdoor shows, and some late-night performances at the newly-renovated La Nouvelle Scène. My picks include:
The city’s favourite band Blue Rodeo is playing two shows in the area: Friday night at the Kemptville Live Music Festival on Friday night (see Colin James and Bruce Cockburn headline the two subsequent nights); then Saturday at the sold-out Perth 200th anniversary concert, though anyone at the nearby, free BBQ Block Party will be able to enjoy the music.
And while the ever-charming, evocative alt-country songsmith Fred Eaglesmith‘s show at The Black Sheep Inn has sold out, he is playing the Kemptville festival on Sunday (1 p.m.), alongside former Great Big Sea member Séan McCann (2 p.m.). July 24, $35. www.kemptvillelivemusicfestival.com

Chamberfest starts Thursday and runs to Aug. 3, offering the usual classical repertoire and some quirky shows, including some free outdoor shows, and some late-night performances at the newly-renovated La Nouvelle Scène. My picks include:
- Afiara Quartet and DJ Skratch Bastid — who is conveniently in town for his massive, all-ages BBQ music party with Just Blaze on Saturday — open the late-night series at the festival, combining scratch hip-hop with string-produced classical tones, as part of their original collaboration, Spin Cycle (July 22, 10 p.m., $30)
- Fubuki Daiko perform Japanese taiko drumming and martial arts in two free, outdoor shows at the Gallery amphitheatre (July 23, 3 p.m. and July 24, 1 p.m.). In the same spot, see a free ragtime show from all-woman saxophone quartet Syrène Saxofoonkwartet (July 23, 1 p.m.), and all-flute quintet Charm of Finches (July 24, 3 p.m.)
- Tap dance and cello come together in the Canadian premiere of a piece written expressly to combine the instrument and percussive movement, with French cellist Michel Strauss and Austrian dancer Max Pollak (July 25, 3 p.m., National Gallery. $30.)
- World music gets a freewheeling, cabaret-cum-chamber treatment from Toronto’s spirited Ladom Ensemble (July 24, 10 p.m., $30)
- Free kids shows start with one by improvising and zany cellist Ersnt Reijseger (July 25, 2 p.m., City Hall), who then joins percussionist Jesse Stewart and saxophonist David Mott in pushing the boundaries of musical style in a late-night, improv session (July 26, 10 p.m, $30). www.chamberfest.com

Other shows to catch around town include:
- Everlast, the rapper and musician who gave us Jump Around as frontman for House of Pain, and songs that have entered our collective consciousness like What It’s Like and Put Your Lights On, plays Mavericks on Sunday. After releasing an acoustic album of his hits, he says his next album — due out sometime this year? — will be all rap. (July 24, 8 p.m., $25 in advance)
- Smokey rock duo Riishi Von Rex ripping up the stage at their first show at The Black Sheep Inn (July 21, $10)
- A power-punk show headlined by the Steve Adamyk Band, days after they shared a stage with the Red Hot Chili Peppers at Bluesfest. The band’s fifth album, Graceland, is due out July 29. (July 22, House of Targ, $10)
- Lew Phillips channels an late-50s pop star at rockabilly show at The Rainbow (July 22, $10)
