The Thousand Islands Playhouse in Gananoque is proud to stage the musical Into the Woods this summer. The show will be on stage from now until August 13. Into the Woods, with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, presents a modern twist on the beloved Brothers Grimm fairy tales of Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Jack and the Beanstalk and Rapunzel. The tales are intertwined with the story of a baker and his wife who go on a journey to reverse a curse placed on them by the witch next door.
Into the Woods has entertained audiences on Broadway, London’s West End and has even been made into a Disney feature film. When the musical opened on Broadway in 1987, it received ten Tony Award nominations, winning for Best Original Score, Best Book and Best Actress in a Musical. The Hollywood film that was released in 2014 also received three Academy Award nominations.
The Thousand Islands Playhouse has pushed the envelope with this production — it’s the largest in the Playhouse’s 35 seasons. At the helm is Thousand Islands Playhouse artistic director Ashlie Corcoran, who is directing the piece.
As the Thousand Islands Playhouse is a summer theatre, Corcoran spends her winters engaged in the Toronto theatre scene. She will be the only woman, and one of only two Canadians, directing at the Canadian Opera Company next winter. Her involvement in theatres outside of Gananoque allows her to attract talent from across the country to the Thousand Islands. The cast and creative team of Into the Woods boasts an impressive list of credits, including the Arts Club Theatre in Vancouver, Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Mirvish Productions, National Arts Centre, National Ballet of Canada, Stratford Festival, Shaw Festival, Theatre Calgary and Vancouver Opera.
Drew Facey, the set and costume designer, is the recipient of 11 Jessie Awards for outstanding design in the Vancouver professional theatre community. The musical director, Stephen Woodjetts, has been honoured with four Betty Mitchell Awards, recognizing outstanding achievement in Calgary’s professional theatre community. He is also the recipient of a Dora award in recognition for his achievements in Toronto theatre. Choreographer Shelley Stewart Hunt performed at the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympic Games opening ceremonies.
Cinderella (Katie Ryerson) shares a moment with Prince Charming (Eric Morin) while her Step-Sisters (Nicola Hadjis, Madison Hayes-Crook) and Step-Mother (Shelley Simester) look on.
Into the Woods has something for audiences of all ages to enjoy. Though these cherished fairy tales are well-known, there are unexpected twists and turns that show what happens after “happily ever after.” Audiences can expect to enjoy an original and modern approach to the production, with costumes and set design that go far beyond common expectations of these popular fairy tales. Facey’s set is inspired by the lush and verdant woodlands that resemble those commonly found on the West Coast.
As a result of the enthusiasm and talent brought by the artists, the show is expected to be a great success. The artists have embraced Into the Woods with delight. From the very beginning, they were well prepared to dive into their roles while bringing Sondheim’s score to life.
Corcoran states that Into the Woods is among her favourite musicals. Her connection and admiration for the story speaks volumes of her capacity to bring this show to the Thousand Islands Playhouse. “What is so great about this piece in particular is that it is full of familiar stories and unfamiliar surprises,” she says. “It is a celebration of family, of purpose and of overcoming obstacles in a community. Beautiful and thoughtful, I know this piece will enchant and delight our audiences.”
Although available on DVD, there is something remarkable about watching Into the Woods unfold live on stage. The Thousand Islands Playhouse will leave a memorable impression on both audiences and artists. From its captivating performances to the beautiful waterfront view, the Thousand Islands Playhouse provides a wonderful experience both on and off the stage.
