The Ottawa Muslim Association said it will cover the funeral costs of the man who died following a confrontation with police Sunday.
Naeem Malik, president of the association, said Tuesday the group will cover the full cost of Abdirahman Abdi’s funeral.
Abdi, 37, died on Monday afternoon, a day after a violent confrontation between him and police. Abdi fled from police responding to a disturbance call Sunday at a Hintonburg coffee shop just a couple hundred metres from Abdi’s apartment building at 55 Hilda St.
A footchase ensued between Abdi and the police, ending in the entranceway of his apartment building, where Abdi lay handcuffed in a pool of his own blood. Police confirmed batons and pepper spray were used in the arrest, and witnesses said Abdi was hit repeatedly by officers.
The Ottawa Muslim Association, which represents the Ottawa Mosque at 251 Northwestern Ave., will dip into a special pool of money donated by members of the mosque to cover funeral costs that typically total around $3,500, Malik said.
“We’re a charitable organization and whenever we have a case where the family doesn’t have the money … We take money out of our account to cover the cost.”
Volunteers at the mosque will prepare the body for burial and then transport it to a Muslim cemetery in Manotick, he added.
“I feel pretty sad because (Abdi) was a young man,” Malik said. “What I saw on the TV, they were beating him up and some people from a balcony were saying ‘let him go’ and apparently he was bleeding.”
The Ottawa Mosque has about 1,o00 members who donate to a fund that helps low-income families with funeral expenses, food costs and other needs, he said.
The Special Investigations Unit, the police watchdog organization, said Abdi’s autopsy will be conducted Tuesday. The family awaits the release of his body to start funeral arrangements.
