Police believe homicide victim Jeremy Mack was killed in self-defence, Postmedia has learned.

Mack, 36, was stabbed multiple times Saturday afternoon at a home on Winthrop Private, just west of the Lincoln Fields Shopping Centre. He was without vital signs when paramedics arrived. Police arrested one man at the scene but that man was later released without any charges.

That man, the sole suspect in the killing, is believed to have acted in self-defence, stabbing Mack only after the now dead man brandished a fake gun in what police believe was a drug-fuelled argument.

It’s unknown at this time whether any charges will be laid in the killing, but police say they continue to investigate.

Acting Staff Sgt. Darren Vinet of the homicide squad said Mack’s killing was an “isolated incident,” that there is no threat to the community.

Mack’s homicide was the 10th in a year that is just shy of eight months old. Ottawa’s homicide total for 2016 is now three more than it was in each of the past two years.

At the time of his killing, Mack was mourning the unrelated death of his partner and the mother of one of his children, Jasmine Gagnon, who died in January.
