Pokemon Go players will have the chance to turn their hats backwards and catch ’em all in a mass “lure party” on Bank Street this Saturday.
The Bank Street BIA plans to set up 25 lures along its street to draw the virtual creatures and attract players of the hit “augmented reality” mobile game to rove the streets in the hopes of generating some business.
A “lure party,” as they’ve come to be known, involves setting a “lure,” or device that temporarily attracts more Pokemon to one area for the benefit of all who pass by, onto “Pokestops,” which can be landmarks, statues or buildings around the city.
“(Pokemon Go) has just been taking over Ottawa … with people playing the game and I think it’s a great way to bring people to the area,” said Julia Weber, marketing manager for the BIA.
Stores on Bank Street will also be holding promotions, such as Stroked Ego’s 10 per cent discount if you tell an employee your favourite Pokemon, she said.
“It’s a really fun way for people to be introduced to the area,” Weber said.
About 1,100 Facebook users have shown interest in the event that will stretch from Wellington Street to Catherine Street from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The Bank Street event is in addition to the Canada Aviation and Space Museum’s lure party Friday that will be drawing players to a Pokestop right at its main entrance at 11 Aviation Parkway.
From 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., museum employees will set up lures in hopes of attracting some rare Pokemon and visitors. Then from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. — while admission is free — the museum will have another lure inside.
A doughnut truck will be parked outside and electrical outlets will be available to keep both players and their smartphones charged.
The Canada Agriculture and Food Museum at 901 Prince of Wales Dr. is also hoping to attract visitors with the allure of Pokemon.
Its lure party will be next Saturday and visitors have the chance to enter for free as long as they can show attendants they have the Pokemon Go app on their phones.
Players are welcome to use the museum’s Wi-Fi and the demonstration kitchen will be baking Pokemon-themed cookies.
