An elderly man was pronounced dead after he was found lifeless in the water by a camper on Saturday at the Bon Echo Provincial Park, located about two hours west of Ottawa.

Ontario Provincial Police said the man, a 73-year-old Oshawa resident, had a medical emergency.

Moose Creek resident Natalie Watkins was in the water at the park at about 3 p.m., on a paddleboard with her two nieces, aged 3 and 7, when she said she saw a man with his head under water, not moving. She said she quickly realized he was in distress and leapt into action, moving him onto her paddleboard and yelling for help while performing CPR.

Three others came to her aid and they moved the man to the beach, where others helped perform CPR until emergency crews arrived.

“His wife was holding my arm, screaming his name,” said Watkins.

OPP said emergency services found him without vital signs. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

His name has not been released.

A post-mortem examination has been scheduled to determine the cause of death.
