If you are looking for a luxury apartment with pristine views of the Ottawa River and downtown skyline, you oughta know that Alanis Morissette’s two bedroom Ottawa condo is on the market.
The 1,800-square-foot condo is in Lowertown off Sussex Drive at 1102-40 Boteler St. It’s listed at $989,000.
The Ottawa-born, Grammy-winning singer-songwriter has owned the 11th floor sub-penthouse condo since 2001. She made her personal mark on it in 2006 when she hired renowned interior designer Ross Rhéaume to combine her love of Eastern influences with a modern Western open-concept layout.

The decor includes hand-carved wooden doors, posts and beams throughout. The master bedroom is equipped with a luxurious ensuite bathroom and spacious walk-in closet. Panoramic windows offer unobstructed northern, western and southern views.

“It is a very special property. In 23 years of my career it probably has the nicest views of anything I’ve ever seen,” said John King, a broker with real estate company Engel & Völkers Ottawa Central, who listed the property. “It’s a sub penthouse floor, but it’s the preferred corner of the building. You get panoramic views of the entire unit over the Ottawa River, so it’s really phenomenal.”

The price tag comes with $1,575 monthly condo fees that cover building insurance, caretaker, heat, management, water and recreation facilities that include a gym and party room.
Her apartment was once featured in MTV’s show Cribs, in which she gave a tour of the renovated space, pointing out her favourite features — inspired from her global travels — that include a platform lounge space, altars, and a recessed nook for a large statue of Buddha.

Asked why the 42-year-old entertainer — known for such hits as You Oughta Know and Ironic — wants to sell a property she has been known to use as a getaway, King said he did not speak to her directly but assumes the lifestyle change might have to do with the Los Angeles resident’s growing family.
“She just had her second child, and it’s a one bedroom, open second bedroom, and a very luxury open concept space, so I’m not sure it works for family. That’s just my sense,” he said.

Until June, Morissette had been writing an advice column at the British newspaper The Guardian. However she confirmed through her Twitter account that she has taken a hiatus to focus on motherhood.
King says the property has drawn some interest since it was listed two months ago. Given it holds a luxury price tag with a Zen-like style, he expects it might take some time to find the right buyer.
“The layout is not going to work for everyone,” said King, who considers the listing “a feather in his cap”.
“It’s really quite an open concept, and the style is also a very personal style, so it will appeal greatly to some but not to others.”
