Travellers on a WestJet flight from Vancouver to Ottawa spent the night in a hotel in Thunder Bay after the plane was the target of a “non-specific” threat.
The airline said flight WS142 landed safely in Thunder Bay at about 10:30 p.m. Wednesday after a phone caller warned there was an explosive device on board the Boeing 737-type aircraft.
The flight was scheduled to arrive in Ottawa at 11:45 p.m.
Thunder Bay police said in a statement “125 passengers and the crew … were safely escorted off the aircraft. The Thunder Bay Police Service is conducting the investigation which will include speaking with passengers and crew of the flight.”
There was no word of where the threat originated.
Passengers were to be provided a new flight to Ottawa Thursday. The first scheduled flight arrives in Ottawa at 1:35 p.m. Thursday.
According to a Twitter post, the passengers were told to leave their belongings on the plane and leave with their hands over their heads.
The matter has been turned over to local authorities. Thank you first responders, WestJetters and flight crew for your assistance. #WS142
