Algonquin College is pulling out of its controversial men-only campus in Jazan, Saudi Arabia.

The college will be handed back to the Saudis when the new school term begins in September, said a press release from Algonquin. A statement from Algonquin President Cheryl Jensen said the Jazan campus failed to meet “financial objectives.”

“We have said from the beginning that the Jazan Campus must be financially viable for us to continue operating,” Jensen said in the statement.

When the Saudi college opened in 2013, officials said it was a way to earn revenue and boost Algonquin’s reputation as a “global leader” in international education.

But the Jazan campus lost money and also attracted critics who said Algonquin should not operate a men-only college in a country that is notorious for its human rights abuses. Premier Kathleen Wynne criticized both Algonquin and Niagara College for operating men-only campuses in Saudi Arabia.

Algonquin officials responded by saying they would try to open a women-only college in Saudi Arabia, too. At the last Algonquin board of governors meeting in June, officials said they were still researching the possibility of opening a women’s college. At that time, they were upbeat about the financial prospects of the male-only campus in Jazan, saying it was on track to earn a profit in 2015-16.

No details were given in the press release about the Jazan campus’s finances, or what if any penalties Algonquin might have to pay the Saudis to be released from the five-year contract it signed to operate the college.

Algonquin College Jazan lost $1.48 million in the 2014-15 school year, after posting a profit of $79,000 in its first year of operation.
