Demonstrations calling for more police accountability over the death of Ottawa’s Abdirahman Abdi have now spread to Toronto.
A major downtown Toronto intersection was taken over during Monday’s morning rush hour by Black Lives Matter demonstrators to present a list of demands to police and politicians.
Abdi died on July 24 following a violent altercation with Ottawa Police, who were called after Abdi was reported to be groping women inside a Bridgehead coffee shop. A cause of death has not been released for Abdi, and the provincial Special Investigations Unit is investigating what happened.
Members of Black Lives Matter Toronto occupied the intersection of Yonge and Dundas streets on Monday, and released videos on their Twitter feed as the demonstration was ongoing.

The group presented nine demands, largely similar to what Ottawa-based groups have previously called for.
The demands included that the SIU release the full report into Abdi’s death, and that Ontario Health Minister Eric Hoskins look into whether the Ottawa Hospital “colluded” with police to mislead the public about the death.
If you think this is an issue just 4 #Ottawa you are sadly mistaken. Here are the demands: #BlackLivesMatter #JusticeForAbdirahman #onpoli
