Enthusiastic supporters of Erica Wiebe rocked the Glen Pub on Hazeldean Road Thursday evening, as they watched the Stittsville wrestler take gold at the Rio Olympics.

“I am so proud of her. I always knew she would do it,” said Katherine Dobson, a friend of Wiebe’s since Grade 7.

Dobson sat at a booth with her family and friends who sported Team Wiebe T-shirts and held up signs saying “Go Wiebe Go.”

She had organized the event to show support for Wiebe in her Olympic final. By the time the match was over, the pub was packed, with about 70 cheering patrons clapping their hands in the air.

“She’s done it and she’s done it better than anyone else in the world,” said Dobson, as she cried tears of joy.

Richard Walker, Glenn Carr and Jim Murphy, who all coach at Sacred Heart High School, where Wiebe first took up wrestling, sat nearby.

“I think we saw dominance in that match, we saw patience and we saw that she knew exactly where she was going to go,” said Walker, the school’s wrestling coach.

Walker reflected on a visit Wiebe paid to her old high school just before heading off to train for her Olympic run.

“She really connected with the students — so she bridges ages, she bridges across sports, she wants to give back to her community, and when she represents like this as seen in the pubs all over Ottawa, we know she’s Ottawa’s kid,” Walker said.

“She’s our golden girl!” said Carr from across the table.

Local politicians also dropped by to show support.

“I’m proud of her effort and I’m proud of the city because this is a win for Ottawa and a win for Canada,” said Stittsville-Kanata Coun. Shad Qadri.

Carleton MP Pierre Poilievre said he was canvassing in Stittsville Thursday and just decided to stop by to watch the match.

“I really admire the sport – I know how difficult it is and I’m just very proud to see a local wrestler prove to be the best in the world. It is a mark of local and national pride,” he said.
