The last days of summer call for some special, surprising and evocative new tunes, to go with all the bittersweet goodbyes to friends, while also anticipating adventures to come. Ottawa, you’re delivering right on time.

First, the House of PainT urban art festival has tweaked its format a little bit this year, moving the main event to Sunday, a day usually reserved for master-classes and talks.

It’s still (mostly) free, with live graffiti art, breaking and popping battles — with New York City’s Rock Steady Crew judging, workshops for all, and keeping the all-ages show on Saturday.

Friday, catch Detroit rapper Illa J., younger brother of legend J. Dilla, topping a show that begins at 5 p.m. in their space under the Dunbar Bridge at Brewer Park (just look for the artists prepping their graffiti spaces). Saturday, the fun shows start noon, with dance battles throughout, ending with a show from local soul funk band Blak Denim at about 9 p.m. Both shows are free,

But its $15 in advance, $25 at the door to catch the Sunday show starting at 3 p.m., topped by east coast sampling masters EPMD, who have been laying rhymes for over 30 years. They’re joined by California’s teen phenom A-F-R-O, short for All Flows Reach Out, who has been making waves with his old-school style, witty wordplay and intricate beats and is worth the ticket fee alone. (Questlove has called him the ‘future of hip-hop.”) That said, there is a stacked lineup, including Saskatoon First Nations rapper Drezus, soul-scented rhymes from Toronto’s pHoenix Pagliacci and local Jesse Dangerously. Aug. 26, 27 and 28, under the Dunbar Bridge, Free, but $25 for Sunday show. houseofpaint.ca

Another treat this week is Toronto’s Odonis Odonis, who have turned in industrial noise for some throbbing, gothic new-wave synth that is a delight for anyone who wants more Dave Gahan, with a touch of horror-fi — possibly inspired by The Fly. (Count me in.) The trio’s third album, Post Plague, released in June is a beautiful, dystopian, technological creation that delves directly into the inhumanity of our narcissistic, modern-machine lives, the impending environmental collapse and obsession with consumerism, while wallowing in its excesses with layered arrangements, and the occasional shriek. Aug. 25, with PIPPA, Ruth Grader, 9:30 p.m., House of Targ, 1077 Bank St. $10 in advance. www.houseoftarg.com

Friday has two uncomplicated, and utterly satisfying picks: Montreal’s Les Deuxluxes make so much sultry, fringed-and-sequined, sexy blues-rockabilly noise you’d swear there were more than two people on stage, propelled by the dynamic voice of lead singer Anna Frances Meyer. The duo are set to release their first nine-song album in September, following a six-song EP in 2014, and will have new songs to share at their return gig. As I have written before, they are captivating live and the studio recordings do not do justice to the real rock star cred of Meyer, live on stage, prancing and flinging her hair about. Aug. 26, with Muck and the Mires, Patrick Shanks, 10 p.m., House of Targ. $6 for 10 p.m. www.houseoftarg.com

Also making a return, albeit mere days after their gig at The Black Sheep Inn, latest indie-pop darlings The Kents play The Rainbow after making quick stops in Toronto and Peterborough. Their single, The Stakes, is completely addictive and has had special mention on iTunes and Spotify, and the rest of their debut EP is full of rock-hooks, utterly suitable for dancing, or relaxing, but definitely enjoying. They play with similar rock-pop group Kasador, and quixotic psych stoner group, Blve Hills. Aug. 26, 9:30 p.m. The Rainbow. $10 at the door. therainbow.ca

It’s taken a few years for local R’n’B/soul band Monday I Retire to finish their first EP, (also, lead singer Mackenzie DiMillo was busy studying music at Carleton), but they’re now throwing a groovesome release party with friends, the Harea Band. MIR, as the band is known to their loyal fans, is part of the soft rock resurgence, but with liberal doses of 70s soul-jazz (Can’t Understand) and funk (Wasting), keeping it fresh with the power of DiMillo’s voice that is both dusty and surprisingly bright, only comparable with Björk’s. But do not be afraid; their songs are catchy, frothsome delights to make you smile. Aug. 27, 9 p.m., $10. The Rainbow. therainbow.ca

Local disco-punk band The Yips (think garage version of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs ) headline a show with other garage-informed bands: Fredericton’s Motherhood play swampy, theatrical art rock and are touring with with their new album, Baby Teeth, out this June. Joining them is indie rock, guitar-heavy band Little You Little Me from Saint John, who were definitely informed by grunge. But the real treat on this line up is new local band Mushy Gushy. It’s made up of music scene veterans, playing indie rock with the typical driving guitars and drums, but shaped by the musical mannerisms of 80s pop, in all its flavours. This is not, however, a gimmick band, and their four-song EP, Tight Snake, is an end of summer delight. Aug. 30, 8 p.m., House of Targ. $5. www.houseoftarg.com
