Parties and welcome activities will soon take over university and college campuses in Ottawa. And with the frosh week celebrations come the risks associated with alcohol and drugs, including the increased incidence of sexual assault and overdoses.

“Drug and alcohol overdoses are preventable,” said Ottawa Public Health in a statement released on Thursday. “The most effective way to avoid an overdose is not to use illegal substances.”

Street drugs are not controlled substances. Their unknown dosage, purity and contamination can increase the risk of adverse reactions or potential overdoses.

Prescription drugs can also be as harmful, the health unit said. When drugs are misused or taken without a doctor’s prescription, or taken with alcohol or other drugs, they can have serious and potentially deadly consequences.

To reduce the risk of drug or alcohol overdoses and associated harms:

DON’T:

  • Use multiple substances at the same time, such as alcohol and drugs.
  • Accept drinks (even water) from people you don’t know.
  • Drink and drive.
  • Drink and cycle.

DO:

  • Stay hydrated with water and take frequent rest breaks.
  • Stay with friends you trust: keep an eye on each other.
  • Avoid drinking games or modify them using non-alcoholic alternatives such as water.
  • Seek help from security staff or people you know if you feel unsafe or unwell.
  • Plan for a safe ride home.
  • If walking, ensure you are visible to drivers.

Call 911 if you or someone else is showing signs of an overdose:

  • Slow, shallow or difficulty breathing and/or bluish lips
  • Changes in consciousness, including confusion
  • Inability to walk or loss of balance
  • Personality changes or hallucinations
  • Vomiting
  • Seizures

Ottawa police said that during frosh celebrations their presence is increased in areas surrounding universities.
