The Ottawa Police Service is advising residents that there’ll be an increased presence of officers on foot and on vehicles in the ByWard Market this weekend.

A sweep of the market Aug. 19 and 20 resulted in 36 Provincial Offence Notices issued, the majority of charges laid were related to breaches of the Ontario Liquor Licence Act.

“Bar owners were cooperative and officers received great feedback from residents and visitors,” said Ottawa Police Superintendent Mike Flanagan. “We plan to continue our increased presence for the next several weeks.”

Officers will be looking to enforce all drug and alcohol offences as well as city bylaws, while serving as a deterrent to violence and possible gang-related activity.

The increased presence in the market comes as many of the city’s post-secondary institutions prepare for “Frosh Week” celebrations. Ottawa Public Health and the “Overdose Prevention Task Force” released a warning to new college and university students about the dangers associated with drugs and alcohol during Frosh Week activities.

The ByWard Market is a popular area for Frosh Week parties and gatherings.
