The city avoided being labelled a walk-blocker Friday, directing workers to remove a sidewalk fire hydrant on the new Booth Street bridge before the crossing opens.

Taxpayers won’t have to shell out more money on top of the $2.1 billion they’re already paying the Rideau Transit Group to build the Confederation Line LRT. The project includes the reconstructed Booth Street bridge, which opens to traffic Sunday.

Steve Cripps, who’s in charge of the city’s rail office, said the hydrant was “improperly located,” so it was dug up Friday at the cost of the contractor.

The hydrant is meant to service the future Pimisi LRT station, Cripps said. The LRT line is scheduled to open in 2018. Cripps said the hydrant will be installed “in a location that will be in keeping with city design standards” prior the station opening.

Cripps said the reinstallation will be at the contractor’s expense, too.
