If you’ve ever thought about being a police officer, here’s one way to get a sense of what you’re in for: Follow a new recruit as she works her way through Ontario’s police college.

Kaleigh Knox started up a new Twitter feed on Sept. 6 to share her experiences, and is inviting followers to send her questions as she goes through her classes.

The Ottawa Police Service is promoting it as an “exclusive look” at the life of a recruit going through the police version of boot camp.

Ottawa Police recruiting is a big story in the city, with the force making a concerted effort to diversify their ranks and attract people to the service who might not have considered it otherwise.

We’ve reported before on the Ottawa Police Service’s efforts to change its face. As most Ottawa police officers are middle-aged white men, the hope is to bring in more women and people from varied backgrounds.

In August, controversy also erupted over a police background investigator quitting due to a new recruit making the force despite the investigator’s conclusion the recruit was unqualified.

So far, most of the responses to Knox’s feed have been from other police officers.

@OPSNewRecruit enjoy. I see the rooms have not changed much! Don't be late for class. Bring your water bottle.

@OPSNewRecruit let me know if you need a hand with the Criminal Code segments. Work hard! Enjoy.

We’ll keep an eye on this experiment as it goes along, and update the post as Knox advances through the program.
