The Ottawa Humane Society is launching the city’s first mobile spay and neuter clinic in low-income neighbourhoods in a bid to control the homeless cat population.

The shelter plans to provide sterilizations to pet owners who will pay a nominal fee and hopes to reach 6,000 surgeries by the second year of the program. Funding for the mobile clinic is expected to come solely through donations.

“This is one of the first mobile clinics in Canada so we’re really excited to put Ottawa on the map in animal welfare. We’ll finally be able to tackle the problem of homeless cats at its root in our city,” said Bruce Roney, OHS executive director, in a news release. “This will change the future for Ottawa’s cats for the better.”

The West Hunt Club Road shelter is hosting a launch event Thursday and is offering tours from 3 to 4 p.m.

The Ottawa Humane Society said it purchased the mobile clinic with funding from a $100,000 grant from PetSmart Charities of Canada.
