If you’ve been following the story of Jonathan Pitre, the “Butterfly Boy,” today is a huge day.

Jonathan, now 16, was born with a severe form of epidermolysis bullosa (EB), a blistering skin disease. He and his mother, Tina Boileau, are in Minnesota to undergo a risky stem cell operation they hope will relieve his pain and extend his life.

Ottawa Citizen reporter Andrew Duffy and photographer Julie Oliver are with Jonathan and his mother at the University of Minnesota Masonic Children’s Hospital.

Jonathan has already been through a round of chemotherapy to prepare for the operation. Bone marrow has been extracted from Boileau, and stem cells from it will be infused into Pitre to try to repair his damaged skin.

We will keep this post updated with the latest news, and you can read our most recent story on Jonathan’s operation here.

Jonathan Pitre's mom, @BoileauTina, is into post-op recovery. She'll join her son later today when her stem cells are transplanted in him.
