Police are appealing to the public for help in finding several “persons of interest” after a ride-sharing driver was allegedly punched and robbed by an unruly passenger.

The Ottawa police robbery unit on Thursday released a crystal-clear photo of three young people allegedly present at the time of the Aug. 11 altercation, and are asking the public for help in identifying them.

According to police, a group of young people, six males and one female, contracted the ride-sharing service to pick them up from a bar at the Kanata Centrum on Roland Michener Drive at around 2:20 a.m. on Aug. 11.

They traveled only a short distance to the intersection of Terry Fox Drive and Hazeldean Road before trouble started brewing when, according to police, one of the males “became belligerent and then punched the driver.”

After landing a punch, the suspect left the vehicle and took the driver’s cellphone with him. The rest of the group then fled the vehicle, and the incident was reported to police.

There were no injuries.

Investigators now want to speak to three people pictured in the snapshot distributed to media and posted on the Ottawa police website. In contrast to the distant, grainy surveillance stills usually released by police, the photo is a close-up snapshot that would typically be shared on social media.

The three are not considered suspects, but rather persons of interest who may have information that would lead to an arrest.

The primary suspect, who is not pictured, is described as a white male between 21 to 26 years old with black hair, a thin beard and glasses with a “chubby” build. He was wearing a black sweater and shorts at the time.

Anyone with information is asked to call the robbery unit at 613-236-1222 ext. 5116.
