Ottawa police have charged the driver who struck and killed cyclist Nusrat Jahan in a collision that re-ignited a conversation on bicycle safety in the city.

Steven Bruce Conley, 38, was charged Friday with criminal negligence causing death and dangerous driving causing death.

Both are hefty charges. The dangerous driving charge carries a maximum 14-year sentence upon conviction, while a successful conviction on criminal negligence causing death can carry a life sentence.

Conley was driving a dump truck for Tomlinson last Thursday when he struck Jahan, 23, at the intersection of Laurier Avenue West and Lyon Street. She succumbed to her injuries at the scene.

Conley was released on a promise to appear and is scheduled to be in court Oct. 3.

Police are hoping to speak to witnesses. Anyone with information is asked to call the collision investigation unit at 613-236-1222 ext. 2481.
