Environment Canada issued a thunderstorm watch for the capital region Saturday.
“Conditions are favourable for the development of dangerous thunderstorms that may be capable of producing strong wind gusts, large hail and torrential rain,” the agency noted.
Forecasters said a fast-moving cold front is expected to sweep in later Saturday afternoon and into the evening.
While the main threats would be “torrential downpours and damaging winds, intense lightning and hail are also possible.”
“An isolated tornado is not completely out of the question,” Environment Canada said.
