Two dead in five serious weekend collisions

Two people are dead after five serious collisions in the Ottawa area from Friday night to Saturday afternoon.

Several other victims were hospitalized in the crashes.

Quebec provincial police responded to a fatal head-on collision around 7 a.m. Saturday on Highway 50 near Grenville, across the Ottawa River from Hawkesbury.

One woman was killed and two others were seriously injured.


Police said the woman was driving west and her car crossed into oncoming traffic. She died of her injuries in hospital.

The driver and passenger of the second car were transported to hospital with what police said were life-threatening injuries.

The highway was closed for most of the day.


It was the second fatality in about 12 hours.

At the dinner hour Friday, a motorcycle collided with a black Range Rover on George Street in the ByWard Market.

Paramedics responding to a 911 call at 6:47 p.m. found the 31-year-old motorcyclist on the pavement, without vital signs. He had suffered “multi-system” trauma, paramedics said. Police confirmed his death Saturday morning.

A short distance away in Sandy Hill, paramedics were called just after midnight Saturday morning after a 20-year-old man was hit by a vehicle on King Edward Avenue near Laurier Avenue.

Paramedics said they “delivered advanced life support” and treated the man for a “severe head injury.” He was in critical condition at hospital.

Hours later in Lowertown, two men were taken to hospital after the car they were travelling in crashed in the St. Patrick Bridge area.

At 3 a.m. Saturday, paramedics received a call about the collision near Vanier Parkway and St-Patrick Street. A 26-year-old man was treated for an injury to his chest and taken to hospital in stable condition and a 27-year-old man with minor injuries was also taken to hospital in stable condition. A third occupant of the vehicle refused to be assessed by paramedics.

Less than a half hour later, Ottawa police once again responded to a collision on city roads.

Firefighters had to extricate the driver of this car after a collision on Hunt Club Road Saturday morning, He was taken to hospital in serious condition.


Police said a Ford F-150, a Toyota Corolla and a Toyota Prius collided at the intersection of Hunt Club and Downpatrick roads around 7:25 a.m.

A 21-year-old man was trapped inside one of the cars which had rolled over and landed upside down on its roof. Firefighters extricated him from the car, where he was trapped for 15 minutes, and paramedics took him to hospital in critical condition with “multi-system trauma.”

The three other occupants of the two other vehicles were treated at the scene and released.

Police continue to investigate all of the collisions.
