TORONTO _ Welcome home, Alfie.

Daniel Alfredsson may have been in the heart of enemy territory in the Battle of Ontario, however, the former Senators’ captain was welcomed with open arms after being granted his Canadian citizenship along with his wife Bibbi Backman during a ceremony Tuesday as part of the World Cup of Hockey.

He was introduced as No. 11 Daniel Alfredsson when accepting his certificate.

“It was really special,” Alfredsson said. “It’s unique becoming a citizen of a second country. Hockey is what brought me over and to have this happen during the World Cup and in Canada, it was a very special day for me and my wife.”

Alfredsson said with his four boys being Canadian this made sense.

“We’ve really established our roots here,” Alfredsson said. “We’ve pretty much lived our whole adult lives in Canada and we’ve really gotten our roots down in Ottawa.

“We’ve got four kids involved in sports and hockey. So we feel more included in the family with the kids as well.”

While he’s working for Sweden, Alfredsson even put on the Maple Leaf for a picture at the end of the ceremony.

“Last time I had a Canadian sweater on I lost a bet to our owner for the world juniors. It’s a beautiful sweater,” Alfredsson said. “I know it means a lot to Canadians but right now it’s blue and yellow in my heart for this tournament.

“If all things go right, it will be a Canada-Sweden final.”

NHL commissioner Gary Bettman and NHLPA executive director Donald Fehr were both on hand while former women’s hockey player Cassie Campbell-Pascall was the presiding official.

A senior adviser for Team Sweden during the tournament, Alfredsson, 43, took a break from his duties and when they sang Oh Canada to end the ceremony with the other 101 new ceremonies it took on new meaning.

“There was different feeling to it today,” Alfredsson admitted. “We knew this was going to be a special day for us. It felt comfortable with all the hockey references and the national anthem.

“Usually when I’ve heard that over the years it’s been 90 seconds to puck drop. It’s a song I know inside/out now because of all the games you play in the NHL. It has a special meaning.”
