CHIXDIGGIT, Sept. 22
This favourite Calgary pop-punk band started their music career in the early 1990s inadvertently, as high school kids making shirts for a fictional band ith a super-cool name. Soon, they had written some songs about girls and stuff, and had developed a following and some musical chops. There’s been no studio album since 2007 for this universally -appealling band — until this month, when they released the EP 2012, a sort of audio diary of their 2012 tour. They’re joined on this punk bill with Montreal’s Boids, who play in The Ramones style, and local screamer band, Pistols at Dawn. Sept 22, House of Targ. $15 in advance. www.houseoftarg.com
Arkona, Sept. 22
Russian folk metal band Arkona headline a melodic hardcore show at Mavericks, with a very early start, at 6:40 p.m. (there are five bands set to go on, starting with prog metal from Isometric, followed by Damnus, thrash from Ominous Eclipse and folk metal from Valfreya. Arkona, inspired by Russian folklore and Slavic history, is not the only folk metal band to have a women among its members, but one of the few to have one fronting the band (Maria Arkhipova) with a convincing, and atmospheric death growl — though singing in Russian probably helps. Sept. 22, 6:30 p.m., Mavericks. $18 in advance. www.chordproductions.com
Beau’s Oktoberfest, Sept 23 to 24
The Vankleek Hill craft brewery’s annual festivities usually sell out, not just for the brews but also for the visionary musical bookers who craft their lineups. That there are still tickets left is no comment on the music, but probably because the brewer moved up the date to try to avoid inclement (freezing!) weather, and has caught some off-guard.
Friday night is a feel-good, party lineup, with 80s alt-rock gurus 54-40 headlining, indie pop rock band Born Ruffians and the Fast Romantics whose soon-to-be-released album may move them from just indie into the fascinating indie pop category so listen for new stuff at this show (this is beginning to read like my playlist … ).
Saturday there’s a day of music before the big show of the night, including a “Folkin’ Wake Up” from 11 a.m. showcasing a lot of local talent, including the do-not-miss vocal power of Oshawa-born, but now Ottawa-based, rock balladeer Rory Taillon (12:45 p.m.) who creates emotive, resonant sound that is best described as a mix of Steve Page and Jack White.
Also catch Montreal’s sweet pop trio Motel Raphaël whose sweet pop has a country flavour — maybe it’s the harmonies? (5:15 p.m.), power pop from Pale Lips (6:45 p.m.) and Newfoundland punk band Brutal Youth, plus headliners synth pop songwriter Hannah Georgas, and alt rapper k-os — whose mixtape Views from the Stix, released this summer, includes tracks with new Polaris Prize winner, Kaytranada (7:45 p.m.). Sept. 23 and 24. Vankleek Hill Fairground. $32/day. beausoktoberfest.ca
Carp Fair, Sept. 24
Those seeking country can find it at the Carp Fair on Saturday, where Corb Lund will be singing about the prairie life, Michelle Wright will be flashing that dazzling smile and this year’s fair favourite, Silver Creek, will keep the party going. Sept. 24, Carp Fairgrounds, $30 after 6 p.m. carpfair.ca
Ska Fest, Sept. 23 and 24
Ska in all its forms is welcome at this two-day party, starting with the Aussie party version from The Resignators (visiting from Korweinguboora — say that five times quickly), Mexico’s energetic punk-leaning Los Kung Fu Monkeys and Ottawa’s brass-heavy Suits ‘N Toques and Quebec’s Old Friends. Things are more laid back on Saturday, with reggae and soul blend, from Montreal’s The Beatdown and Danny Rebel & The KGB, but not before there’s some bright brass from Buffalo Ska (from Buffalo, NY), Sound One, and The Sentries. Sept. 23 and 24, 10 p.m., House of Targ. $13 before 10 p.m. www.houseoftarg.com
Coeur de Pirate, Sept. 28
The entrancing Québecoise songwriter is back and, while tickets are still available at time of publication, this may not last long. (Her other shows in the region have sold out weeks in advance.) The Juno Award-winning, Polaris-prize nominated singer has made a splash outside of Quebec with her third and most recent album, Roses, a bilingual pop-art endeavour that grabs the listener with emotion, but that pales to her live performance. This show is one of a showcase of concerts of Félix-Award nominees (given to Québec musicians) at Salle Odyssée. Sept. 28, with KRoy, 8 p.m., Salle Odyssée. $35-$39. salleodyssee.ca
Dead Broke, The Beauts, Sept. 28
Halifax’s neo-new romantics The Beauts are a bit of an odd addition to this dominantly punk show, sandwiched between the scintillating rock band Dead Broke (think The Clash) and Ottawa’s Valveenus, though the two do veer towards the melodic and fun side of the genre. The Dead Broke are a worth the night on their own, but The Beauts are a must-see, based on their sophomore four-song EP, released this past June, solidifying the band’s sound (think Modest Mouse blended with early Police and The Cure). The band has only been playing together for about two years, and came together haphazardly when Darryl Smith (Writer’s Strike) and Palmer Jamieson (Night Surf) began writing songs, pulled in bass player Eric Van Lunen and drummer Joel Waddell — both Smith knew from playing with Rich Aucoin’s band — and then they suddenly had a spot at NXNE and a tour. They’ve got two more songs coming out in October, and another EP planned for spring. Sept. 28, 9:30 p.m., House of Targ. $7. www.houseoftarg.com
