A transmission failure is being blamed for a major power outage that has turned the lights out to more than 150,000 customers in the Outaouais, Hydro Quebec said Monday.
Gatineau police have deployed officers to major intersections as traffic lights in the municipality have been knocked out during the outage, which started around 4:30 p.m.
As of 5:30 p.m., Hydro Quebec spokeswoman Marie-Elaine Devault said approximately 56,000 customers are still in the dark. The power failure was triggered by a transmission failure in the Outaouais and Vignan substations, she said.
Power is expected to be restored to most customers within an hour, Hydro Quebec said in a tweet at 5:44 p.m.
Around the same time as the Quebec outage, Hydro Ottawa reported the lights were out for than 2,000 customers in Rideau-Rockcliffe, Capital and Alta Vista wards due to an unrelated loss of supply from the provincial power grid. Power was restored to those areas just after 5:30 p.m.
