Prime Minister Justin Trudeau had an audience with actor and activist Emma Watson on Parliament Hill on Wednesday, as the Harry Potter star arrived in town to take part in the One Young World Summit.
The 26-year-old Watson, who two years ago was appointed UN Women Goodwill Ambassador, praised Canada’s second-youngest-ever PM (Joe Clark, FYI) for his “inspiring” decision to make his cabinet an even split of women and men.

The pair, along with former UN secretary general Kofi Annan, will meet MPs and speak Wednesday at 6 p.m. on the Parliament Hill steps, half an hour before the summit’s official opening ceremonies, which also take place on the Hill.
One Young World is a U.K.-based global forum for young leaders aged 18 to 30. Described by CNN as a “junior Davos,” its annual summit, held this year in Ottawa (“the administrative heart of Canada,” according to a summit brochure) from Sept. 28 to Oct. 1, will attract 1,300 such delegates from almost 200 countries, with each engaged, advised and hopefully inspired by such “counselors” like Watson and Annan to enact change for the better in their own country.

Watson, whose participation in the summit was only announced Wednesday owing to concerns over her safety and privacy, will address delegates at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday in the Shaw Centre, with a 40-minute discussion on gender equality. Other topics scheduled for the four-day event include poverty, employment, climate change, LGBT discrimination, technology, energy, depression and extremism.
Other counsellors at this year’s summit include musicians Cher and Sir Bob “I Don’t Like Mondays” Geldof, Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus, Titanic and Avatar producer Jon Landau, author Fatima Bhutto, aboriginal Senator and former Truth and Reconciliation Commission chair Murray Sinclair, onetime astronaut-turned-politician Marc Garneau, Olympic swimmer Mark Tewksbury, former Irish president and UN Special Envoy for Climate Change Mary Robinson and all-round activist and We Day founder Marc Kielburger.
