If summer is for pop songs, autumn is for rock, perhaps because the weather calls for layering the jean and leather jackets, and shrugging with hands dug deep into front pants pockets — suitably dirty from a day of labour.
Adam Baldwin, Sept. 30
Nova Scotia’s singer-songwriter Adam Baldwin, erstwhile member of Matt May’s Band, answers the season’s call with his first, full-length solo album of “blue-collar” anthems, No Telling When, released this past June. It’s a Springsteen-esque album, directly informed in the songwriting by the 80s with sax and keyboards, created with help from some heavy-hitting friends from the Sam Roberts Band, Alvvays and even July Talk — who join him on this tour, but not for this show.
The album has everything you could want, wrapped in earnestness: heartrending songs that stick around (Love You With My Eyes Closed), comments about political and systemic failures with Rehtaeh and Daylight, a seemingly feel-good, rhythm-heavy song, but addressing the “unity and division” seen in our last federal election. Sept. 30, 8 p.m., Zaphods. $10. zaphods.ca
Krief, Sept. 29
Another rock star better known for his work in a band, Krief (part of The Dears), has just released his fourth solo double album, Automanic Red and Automanic Blue. The 20 songs on this epic work were created by channelling the emotion of a “devastating a string of deaths and the end of a romance,” but while the two albums go together, they are not meant to both be listened to in one sitting: Red is about movement, recklessness or “kicking off the weekend,” while Blue is for Sunday contemplation. The songs I have heard are best described as mid-career U2 sifted through a dream haze. Sept. 29, with Novusolis, 8 p.m., Zaphod’s. $10 in advance. spectrasonic.com / zaphods.ca
Red Rails, Sept. 30
Ottawa power rock trio The Red Rails, who you might have caught right before the Red Hot Chili Peppers at Bluesfest this summer, are headlining a blues-flavoured show at House of Targ, but lean themselves towards a more classic rock sound, with a bit of funk. Lead singer and guitarist Kim Vincent says the trio, who last put out an album (their debut) in 2014, are madly writing new songs, but still tweaking their sound, which may include a new instrument — a microKorg synthesizer, but not a new member — while promising their sound will remain very “Red Rails,” with bass driving the song. They’re planning on releasing a new single this fall, and then a few more, instead of putting out a whole album. (And no, they’ve not yet pursued signing with a label; but they’d not say no if one came a-calling.) There will be two new songs to hear at this show, when they are joined by Halifax-cum-Toronto-based band Bloody Diamonds, who are at their core a 90s, Paramore-like, soul-rock duo fronted by Sarah Elizabeth, but will be performing with a full band in Ottawa. Sept. 30, with The Wicked Mercy, 10 p.m., House of Targ. $10. www.houseoftarg.com
Reuben and the Dark, Oct. 1
Calgary’s indie folk-rock sensation Reuben and the Dark plays an intimate show, featuring throbbing rhythms, layered over by the evocative and lulling voice of frontman Reuben Bullock, playing with the dichotomy of joy (in the soaring, driving arrangement) and misery (in the lyrics).
He is joined by a songwriter we’ve mentioned before, the 6-foot tall, self-described “song-farmer” Charlotte Cornfield, whose music is as distinctive: folk rock creations that are quirky, earnest and raw, reminiscent of Neil Young but aided by her impressive range and ability to stay in tune, even when you’re sure she is going to waver off. Oct.1, all-ages, 8 p.m., St. Albans Church. $16. spectrasonic.com
Dévah Quartet, Oct. 1
Prog-rock, string group the Dévah Quartet are back after blowing minds at their last show at House of Targ, when those who expected some pretty little sounds from this all-woman band were blown away but their showmanship, from originals to metal covers. Oct. 1, with Muffler Crunch, Thunderkok, 10 p.m., House of Targ. $10. www.houseoftarg.com
Billy Bragg and Joe Henry, Oct. 5
UK protest punk rock/country songwriter Billy Bragg joined Americana musician Joe Henry for a cross-country tour on the railroads this past year, capturing the sounds of the rails along with the songs it inspired over centuries. These were released, background noise included, on their album Shine A Light: Field recordings from the Great American Railroad. The duo will be playing from this album, but also from their own, immense catalogues. And are sure to share some musings on the state of the world. Oct. 5, 8 p.m., Bronson Centre Theatre. $35. spectrasonic.com
