No vehicles were swallowed up this time, but Ottawa police took extra precautions by closing part of Rideau Street on Sunday when another sinkhole opened up.

Police said a “small sinkhole” appeared during construction. Rideau was closed Sunday afternoon between Sussex Drive and Dalhousie Street as city crews assessed the hole.

Buses that normally use Rideau Street were being detoured to the Mackenzie Road bridge, but have since been allowed back on Rideau as of Monday morning.

Coun. Mathieu Fleury said on Twitter the hole was one foot wide and two feet deep, and was caused by “settlement of grout in the bore holes” during construction.

Commuters should keep in mind there were previously announced nightly road closures for the same stretch of Rideau Street beginning Monday through December. The two-block section will be closed from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. due to ongoing LRT Confederation Line construction.

During that time, buses are diverted to Mackenzie King bridge and businesses remain open, according to the city.

The small sinkhole appeared almost four months after a massive sinkhole gobbled up a parked van on June 8 and shut down the same section of Rideau Street for nearly three weeks.
