Ottawa – The City of Ottawa in partnership with Ottawa’s post-secondary institutions, school boards, and local community groups held the Ottawa Welcome Event for International Students (OWEIS) event today at City Hall to provide international post-secondary students with information about the many City and community services, programs and resources available to them.
“Ottawa is a diverse and welcoming city, so no matter where these students come from in the world, they will find people in Ottawa with similar cultural and linguistic backgrounds,” said Mayor Jim Watson. “Hopefully, after living and studying here, these students will choose to stay in Ottawa, to continue to contribute to the local economy and further enrich our cultural diversity or do so in their home nation as our ambassadors.”
“International students not only enrich the diversity of their communities, they also bring new skills and ideas that help grow local economies,” said Laura Albanese, Provincial Minister of Citizenship and Immigration. “By helping international students and newcomers to our country better integrate into the social and economic fabric of the community, Ottawa is positioning itself for continued prosperity.”
The event included workshops, an information fair featuring City and community resources, networking opportunities, and games and entertainment. Funding for the event was provided by the Government of Ontario.
“Ottawa is an attractive and growing destination for international students,” said Councillor Diane Deans, Chair of the Community and Protective Services Committee. “In 2012, our city was one of the largest international student destinations in Canada with more than 8,500 students studying here. It’s an honour to welcome these students to Ottawa and to encourage them to enjoy everything our city has to offer.”
