An investigation continues into an early morning fire at a high-rise on Wurtemberg Street near Rideau Street that sent nine people, including three children and a police officer to hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation.
Ottawa Fire Services says it received “multiple” calls for smoke and fire on the sixth floor of a high-rise at 215 Wurtemburg St. at about 2 a.m.
By 2:24 a.m., fire services confirmed the seriousness of the blaze and a second alarm was issued for more firefighters and equipment.
Ottawa police responders were first on the scene and began the evacuation, alerting residents to the danger and helping them to the street.
An Ottawa police officer was among the victims taken to hospital with smoke inhalation.
All the patients were described as being in stable condition.
At least four other residents were assessed for smoke inhalation and other injuries but not taken to hospital.
OC Transpo buses were dispatched to the scene to provide emergency shelter for the fire victims.
The fire was reported under control shortly before 3 a.m.
More than 100 people have been displaced by the fire. Officials were not able to say when residents would be permitted to return.
Residents were put up at a Salvation Army centre following the fire.
