Human remains found in Manotick last spring have been identified as an Ottawa teen who went missing from his home more than 22 years ago.

Ottawa police said Wednesday the remains found at a construction site on Cabrella Place in Manotick on May 10 are those of 19-year-old Shafiq Visram.

Visram was a Grade 12 student at South Carleton High School at the time of his disappearance on May 30, 1994.

Police considered him a runaway at the time, but now the Ottawa police major crimes unit is asking for the public’s help to determine the circumstances of his disappearance. Police talked to the girl who rode home beside him on the school bus that day and she said nothing seemed out of the ordinary. Nor did his family report him being depressed.

His school books were found beside a nearby creek, but a search by police divers, a K-9 unit, even spotters in a helicopter turned up no sign of him.

Shafiq’s family have been notified about the discovery.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Major Crime Unit at 613-236-1222, ext. 5493. Anonymous tips can be submitted by calling Crime Stoppers toll-free at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS), or by downloading the Ottawa Police app.
