Many people worrying about cable moderm safty issue,
anybody can explain detail.

My opinion

The biggest difference between Cable moderm and Dial up is that normailly dial up use DHCP to assign IP address for single user, so the IP address is dynamic, but the Cable use fix IP address. Most hacker attack do not occure in short time, the most important thing they do is monintor the traffic on the net, using sniffer etc. the objective is to lock down the target and then attack. So normally it need time to find the weak point of specail computer system. But the dynamic IP address make it not easy to follow, but fixed IP is much easier. So fixed IP is more dangerious than DHCP. Be careful.

I notice that cable moderm ip address doesn't change so oftern as dial up. But what i heard form Rogers is that Cable moderm use DHCP also. Most people is worry about share cable line by the users in the same area. I want to hear more about that. Thanks.

Setting up a firewall is supposed to be an ultimate solution of security issues.

Cable modem users can get this IP by DHCP or Static. That is totally up to your provider's policy. And DHCP can be configured as Dynamic and Static too, if you are familiar with dhpcd.conf you should know this.

If your PC is a UNIX box other than Windows, you should take a close at your machine as there should be a full procedure that you need to follow to lock your computer down to a secure one.

I am not worry about my computer since there are both hardware and software solution in my network to protect my system. What I am worrying about is the the packet I send out to the network. For example, my personal info.

if your personal info is wrapped by ssl then why worry.

also hacking the cable signal isn't as easy as running a sniffer on lan.
