Two men suffered non-life threatening injuries after a man defending himself at his house with a baseball bat had the weapon used against him, Gatineau police said.

A man answered a knock at his door at about 12:35 a.m. on Saturday morning at 43 Lanaudière St., in a residential block near Alexandre-Taché Boulevard and the Gatineau Park. There, he was confronted by three men and one woman, some of whom began attacking him, police said.

The resident, whose wife and a child were at home and asleep, then grabbed a baseball bat to defend himself. The bat was taken from him by the assailants and used to injure the resident.

A neighbour saw the crowd in the street with the baseball bat and contacted police, who arrived and took the four assailants into custody.

The identities of the four involved were not released by police, but all are adults.

One of the assailants and the resident were treated for injuries that were not considered life-threatening. The resident remained in hospital Saturday morning.

Police said they did not immediately know if the assailants and resident were known to each other, but were continuing their investigations.
