An Algonquin College student was one of three people charged criminally by Kingston Police Saturday after one of the force’s horses was slapped three times.
The student, a man from Cobourg and a female Queen’s student were charged after Murney, a new police horse still in training, was slapped three times on the hindquarters during street revelry associated with Queen’s University’s often rowdy homecoming event.
The three face charges under a new section of the Criminal Code that makes it an offence to injure a law enforcement animal. The section carries a maximum penalty of five years in prison.
Despite being slapped, Murney remained calm and didn’t bolt or buck, Kingston Police said.
The identities of those charged haven’t yet been released but will likely be made public Monday, a police spokeswoman said.
