Ottawa – Waste Reduction Week is the perfect opportunity for residents to challenge themselves to divert waste from entering the landfill.

On Tuesday, October 18, Councillor David Chernushenko, Chair of the Environment Committee, will read a proclamation on behalf of Mayor Jim Watson at the beginning of the Committee meeting declaring the week of October 17 to 23 as Waste Reduction Week in the City of Ottawa.

Residents can look forward to the following activities during the week:

Fall Give Away Weekend

Citywide

October 22 and 23

One person’s trash is another’s treasure! Set your gently used items out at the curb for Fall Give Away Weekend. Tour your neighbourhood and city to find hidden treasures.

Rules for setting out items:

  • Place items at the curb
  • Place stickers or signs on items with the word "FREE"
  • Ensure any items you want to keep are away from your give-away treasures or tucked away safely in your garage
  • At the end of the day, bring any uncollected items back to your home or donate them to a local charity

Final Household Hazardous Waste Depot for 2016

Date: Sunday, October 23

Time: 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Location: OC Transpo Park & Ride, 3355 Fallowfield Road

Residents can properly dispose of items such as paints, stains, pool chemicals, fluorescent tubes, computers, TVs and cameras for free during the depot. No commercial waste will be accepted. For a complete listing of acceptable household hazardous waste, visit ottawa.ca.

Residents can also safely dispose of electronic waste and many kinds of household hazardous waste by returning them to participating local retailers during their regular business hours. For a list of participating retailers, visit ottawa.ca/wasteexplorer.

Waste Reduction Week is an annual event that challenges Ottawa residents to think about what they throw away and to learn about the many services the City offers to protect our environment by increasing waste diversion.
