A large, cross-country investigation into allegations of human trafficking has led to 67 charges being laid against 25 people.

The investigation, known as Operation Northern Spotlight, employed the expertise of officers from 36 different policing organizations, including the Ottawa Police Service. The results were announced Tuesday. This is the fifth year the massive investigation has taken place.

Police directly engaged with people suspected of partaking in the sex trade, potentially against their will. During numerous coordinated investigations over a six-day period, police identified and charged 25 people with 67 offences related to prostitution and human trafficking.

Police were also able to free 16 people who they said had been working in the sex trade either as a minor or against their will.

A total of 207 police officers took part in the investigation.

Charges laid include trafficking persons under the age of 18, procuring sexual services under 18, procuring sexual services, child luring, advertising sexual services, assault and various Controlled Drug and Substances Act offences.
