Residents of Barrhaven and Riverside South might soon have a new place to buy their heirloom tomatoes and organic kale.
Gloucester-South Nepean Coun. Michael Qaqish will ask the planning committee on Tuesday to direct staff to initiate a rezoning to permit a new farmers’ market at the Riverview park and ride. The land is currently zoned ‘Development Reserve,” which recognizes lands intended for future urban development and limits the range of permitted uses to those that won’t preclude future development options.
In the report he prepared for the committee, Qaqish says the Ottawa Farmers’ Market Association supports the idea. The market would on either Saturday or Sunday, when the demand for transit is lower.
“It is hoped that the necessary zoning could be in place for the Farmers’ Market to commence operation in the spring, 2017. While the zoning circulation and consultation is underway, the details of the operation can be finalized so that such are known when the zoning comes before Council for consideration,” Qaqish writes.
According to the report, the transportation services department — which includes OC Transpo — does not have issues with this proposal and, if approved, has pledged to work with event central staff to set up an approval/permit system.
If the planning committee and council dig Qaqish’s request, the rezoning would follow the standard consultation process.
