Commuters were being warned to expect delays due to road closures after a woman believed to be in her 80s died when her car collided with a school bus on Highway 174 Monday afternoon.
None of the 33 students aged 12 to 14 or their two teachers were injured. They were picked up by a replacement bus.
The driver of the bus, a man in his 60s, suffered a hand injury, possibly a fracture, in the collision but was in stable condition.
Paramedics were called to the highway near Quigley Hill Road at 2:39 p.m. They declared the occupant of the car dead at the scene. Ottawa Fire reported that the occupant had to be extricated from the vehicle.
The City of Ottawa reported that 174 was closed between Trim Road and Cameron Street.
Ottawa police asked the public to avoid the area.
