Ottawa – Mayor Jim Watson and Gloucester-Southgate Ward Councillor Diane Deans presented the Mayor’s City Builder Award to Friends of the Greenboro Library at today’s City Council meeting.
The Greenboro Branch of the Friends of the Ottawa Public Library Association (FOPLA) is a group of community volunteers who have given over 25,000 hours of their own time for the Ottawa Public Library (OPL). This group of dedicated volunteers have sorted, priced and sold tens of thousands of books, successfully raising over $100,000 for the OPL.
The volunteers strive to maintain a warm and welcoming environment for everyone using the Greenboro Community Centre.
This is seen through their unique café style environment and being able to provide the Greenboro Library with items from the Greenboro “wish list”, such as audio-visual equipment, shelving for DVD’s and furniture for the children’s area. The volunteers also provide opportunities for high school students to earn their community service hours.
The Greenboro Branch recently celebrated their 10th anniversary and over the years these individuals have gone above and beyond to improve and give back to the community. The volunteers are the backbone of the huge support FOPLA gives to the Greenboro Library.
With their efforts, the Greenboro Community Centre and Library have become a lively gathering place where people come to be informed, entertained and inspired. The volunteers have worked hard to build and maintain a strong relationship with both the library and community. On any given day, the hustle and bustle surrounding their café and book shop makes it clear how these volunteers are well-loved and appreciated by this community.
The Mayor’s City Builder Award is a civic honour created to recognize an individual, group or organization that has, through outstanding volunteerism or exemplary action, demonstrated an extraordinary commitment to making our city a better place today and for the future. This may include lifelong service, outstanding acts of kindness, inspiring charitable work, community building or other exemplary achievements.
Individuals, groups or organizations may be nominated by members of City Council or the public.
The award is presented at the beginning of each City Council meeting.
