One week after a jury found Jacques Rouschop guilty of raping two Vanier sex trade workers, the Ottawa man whose failed micro-penis defence made international headlines has fired his lawyer.

Rouschop, 44, has yet to be sentenced for the sex crimes, but is now hoping for new legal representation after dropping criminal defence lawyer Natasha Calvinho. He told the court via video link from the basement of the Elgin Street courthouse Friday that he is applying for legal aid and is in early talks with a new lawyer.

Reached by phone Friday afternoon, he said he was dissatisfied with his lawyer at trial and accused Assistant Crown Attorney Meaghan Cunningham of “brainwashing” the jury with details about a separate investigation into the unsolved killing of another sex trade worker, Amy Paul, 27.

“The way it was done, it was not right,” Rouschop said from jail.

Calvinho could not be reached for comment on Friday.

Now a convicted rapist, Rouschop said he plans to raise a number of legal arguments in an appeal that has yet to be filed.

His hunt for a new lawyer comes as the Crown Attorney’s office is vying to have him branded a dangerous offender, a designation that means he could serve an indeterminate sentence with no chance of parole for at least seven years.

A jury of six men and six women found him guilty on Oct. 18 of aggravated sexual assault and choking after a three-week trial. On the stand, he testified his heavy frame and small penis made it impossible for him to have committed the crimes.

Rouschop will return to court on Dec. 2 for his sentencing hearing.
