Mother Earth is in place and awaiting her floral gown as Gatineau and the National Capital Commission continue their preparations for the multimillion-dollar “Mosaïculture” flower show as part of the the 150th anniversary of Confederation next year.
The 15-metre-tall Mother Earth (Terre Mère) installation will be the centrepiece of a display of works of floral and plant sculpture spread across Jacques Cartier Park.
More than 800,000 visitors are expected to take in the exposition.
The “lady ambassador,” as the centrepiece is also known, will spend the winter under a snow shield until plants can be installed in the spring.
The overall exposition — also dubbed MOSAICANADA 150/2017 — will embrace five themes, according to Hull-Aylmer MP Greg Fergus: Diversity, Inclusion, Youth, Environment and First Nations reconciliation.
Many of the displays will be developed in direct cooperation with First Nations elders and officials, in particular with the Algonquin First Nation, who are predominant in the region.
While most of the Mosaiculture presentation will be in Jacques Cartier Park, the NCC also plans a large installation on Ottawa’s Nepean Point, overlooking the park.
