Ottawa – The Beijing Symphony Orchestra will perform in Ottawa at the National Arts Centre on February 12, 2017, with a special program in honour of Canada’s 150th Anniversary. Mayor Jim Watson made the announcement today along with Patrick Lin, CEO of RideauStone Arts Centre, which will sponsor the concert with the support of the Beijing Municipal Government.
“This concert by the Beijing Symphony Orchestra will be a cultural jewel for Ottawa in 2017, and it further highlights the strength of our partnership with the City of Beijing,” said Mayor Watson. “I encourage Ottawa residents to come out and enjoy this outstanding orchestra and celebrate our strong ties with our sister city, Beijing, as well as with the people of China.”
The City of Ottawa has a special relationship with the City of Beijing that dates back to 1999 when Mayor Watson signed an agreement making Ottawa and the City of Beijing sister cities. To date, this agreement remains Ottawa’s only international agreement with another city.
“For years, the City of Beijing has cherished this special relationship and actively promoted its development,” said Haisheng Zhao, Minister Counsellor of Culture, Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Canada. “This concert will celebrate the creation of Canada, and will also celebrate the Chinese New Year, with the people of Ottawa. The City of Beijing will offer other cultural activities in 2017, with many surprises in store for residents of the City of Ottawa.”
RideauStone Arts Centre was formally established by RideauStone Investments Inc. earlier this year with the goal of promoting an exchange of culture and performances between Canada and China. To support the Beijing Symphony Orchestra’s concert in Ottawa, RideauStone Arts Centre is providing a financial endowment of close to half a million dollars.
“The Beijing Symphony Orchestra features some of China’s foremost musicians and is widely noted for its artistic excellence, an extensive repertoire and unique Chinese style, and it has become one of the nation’s most popular orchestras,” said Mr. Lin. “This concert reflects the commitment of RideauStone Arts Centre to promoting the exchange of music and art between China and Canada.”
The Beijing Symphony Orchestra has collaborated with many world renowned conductors including Evgeny Svetlanov, David Porcelijn and Jean Perisson. Guest soloists with the orchestra have included: tenors Jose Carreras, Andrea Bocelli, and Marco Berti.
Tickets for this concert are available through the National Arts Centre box office and through the RideauStone Arts Centre website, rideaustone.ca.
