Paul Evans is a professor of Asian and trans- Pacific affairs at the University of British Columbia and the former C0-CEO of the Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada. He is the author of eight books and published, in 2014, Engaging China: Myth, Aspiration and Strategy in Canadian Policy from Trudeau to Harper.
Professor Evans has directed exchange and partnership projects with numerous institutes in Asia and the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He is member of the International Council of the Asia Society in New York, he also sits on the editorial boards of The Pacific Review and The Chinese Journal of International Politics, The Chinese Quarterly of Strategic Studies.
The Liberal government has come to power having said almost nothing about China during the election campaign or in its platform. China matters for Canadian prosperity, security, and values in unprecedented ways.
While deeper and broader engagement of China is in Canada’s national interest, simply turning back the clock to the strategic partnership of a decade ago is neither wise nor likely. A new Canadian approach requires a whole of country effort with determined leadership at the most senior levels of government, bipartisan support and a new narrative.
*No pre-registration. Entry is free for CCFS members and $5 for non-CCFS members. Memberships are available at the door. Annual membership is $20 for individuals, $30 for a family, $12 for students and $17 for a student family. Information about membership, the Society and this event are available at www.ccfso.org.
