Imagine living in a historic Canadian riverside community in the midst of the Thousand Islands; in a place where a mild climate, clean air and sparkling water are balanced by great shopping, restaurants and theatres. Now add affordable quality housing, access to modern medical facilities locally and on both sides of the Canada/U.S. border – including a $200 million expansion of the closest full-service hospital – plus direct highway, rail and air links to all of Canada and the U.S., and you’ve got Brockville, Ont.

Founded in 1785 by a Loyalist veteran of the American Revolutionary War, Brockville today is a heritage-rich home to 23,000 residents in the city proper and close to 100,000 people within 30 minutes’ drive. Compared to Toronto and Montreal – both just a few hours’ drive down Hwy. 401 that runs through Brockville – quality housing is astoundingly affordable here, with the average cost of a single-family home just over $200,000. That is hundreds of thousands of dollars less than you’d pay in either Toronto or Montreal.

The climate in Brockville is wonderfully mild by Canadian standards, with the mean January temperature hovering just below freezing (-3 C), and July’s mean temperature staying at a comfortable 26 C. With a yearly average of 112 cm of rain, Brockville has lots of sunny days.

“The basics make Brockville a very affordable and livable city for retirees and seniors,” said David Paul, the City of Brockville’s economic development director. “But it is the extras that really make our city shine. Being on the St. Lawrence River and among the Thousand Islands, the variety of recreational activities is astounding; boating, fishing and scuba diving being just three of them. Then there are our many attractions like the just-opened Aquatarium marine centre – it has live otters! – our Tall Ships and our many wine, food and artistic festivals. Add Brockville’s historic downtown with its superb shops and restaurants, and moving here is like retiring to a world-class resort.”

Put it altogether, and Brockville is an ideal location for retirees to put down roots for the next phase of their lives; a phase that can be filled with lots of recreational pleasures in a pristine environment that is nevertheless close to all the facilities and amenities they could ever need – on both sides of the border.
