Ottawa – Four local entrepreneurs have been recognized for their significant contributions to the Ottawa economy by Mayor Jim Watson who presented them with Immigrant Entrepreneur Awards during the TiE (The Indus Entrepreneurs) 2016 Conference (TiECon Canada) held at the Brookstreet Hotel this morning.
“Immigrant entrepreneurs are creating jobs and making important and impactful contributions to our regional economy and community,” said Mayor Watson. “They add value to our city in many unique ways, from the development of innovative technologies to the creation of new jobs and the generation of domestic and global partnerships that strenghten our local economy.”
The 2016 award winners are:
Claudia Arizmendi, owner and operator of the Cupcake Lounge
Ms. Arizmendi is originally from Mexico and started baking cupcakes more than 20 years ago. She is a graduate of the Baking and Pastry Arts Program at Algonquin College and has since grown her passion and talent into a thriving and wonderful business that employs more than 100 people. Her bakery also supports many local charities.
Seema Aurora, President and Chief Executive Officer at TAG HR
Born in Budapest, Hungary, Ms. Aurora lived in many different countries before arriving in Toronto where she pursued her academics and graduated from Seneca College specializing in International Business. She went on to a successful career in corporate management in Toronto and Ottawa. In 1990, she established TAG HR, specializing in IT and professional staffing.
Originally headquartered in Ottawa with two employees, the company now has a staff of 45 in-house employees and more than 500 off-site consultants. TAG HR is the leading supplier to the Federal Government and operates in Toronto, Vancouver, Calgary and Montreal, creating many jobs in Canadian markets. Ms. Aurora is also recognized for her contributions to the community, including sponsoring sports teams, funding drives, festivals, both in Ottawa and in other locations across Canada, and supporting many charities.
Alvaro Pombo, founder and Chief Executive Officer of ProntoForms
As CEO and founder, Mr. Pombo brings 28 years of leadership and telecommunications experience to ProntoForms, a leading mobile workflow platform used by more than 3,500 businesses to collect and analyze field data with smartphones and tablets.
Mr. Pombo is active in research and development, product strategy, and business development, and plays a fundamental role in financing and driving strategy. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering from Universidad de los Andes in Bogota, Colombia, an MBA from the University of Ottawa, and an executive degree from Georgetown University.
Prior to founding ProntoForms, Mr. Pombo was Chief Information Officer and Vice President of Global Information Technology for the Carrier Internetworking Division of Alcatel-Lucent. He served as consultant to Palm and other technology leaders, and continues to help nurture entrepreneurs and innovation.
Aydin Mirzaee, co-founder Fluidware
Originally from Iran, Mr. Mirzaee co-founded Fluidware in 2008 and in less than six years grew the company to 90 employees before it was acquired by SurveyMonkey in 2014.
Mr. Mirzaee is a thought leader in Software as a Service (SaaS) and serves as an advisor to SaaS North, the biggest conference of its kind in Canada. He also serves as Committee Chair of Freshfounder, an invite-only group for Ottawa founders to support the success of local tech start-ups
“This year’s award winners are unique and successful business people, but they are also representative of other newcomers to our community who are working to succeed and make a difference,” said Mayor Watson. “I congratulate them for their success and thank them for their contributions.”
The Immigrant Entrepreneur Awards, now in its fifth year, recognizes the business success of those born outside of Canada and now living in Ottawa for their significant contributions to the city’s economy.
TiE Ottawa is the local chapter of TiE, a non-profit global network that fosters entrepreneurship. TiECon Canada is TiE's flagship conference that attracts businesses from Ottawa and North America – including many global and U.S. high-tech firms from Silicon Valley.
