Ottawa police are conducting raids of marijuana dispensaries across the city.

On Friday morning, police officers, some dressed in black balaclavas, raided pot shops in at least five locations. It’s the first police action in Ottawa against the city’s 17 illegal pot shops. It’s not yet clear how many total pot shops are being raided.

At least five police officers were at the Wee Medical Dispensary Society on Rideau just east of Nelson Street, next to the Somerset West Community Health Centre.

At least one employee, a female, was taken into custody in handcuffs.

Several customers inside the store were released by police.

Over at the CannaGreen store on 2288 St Joseph Blvd., police were seen leading one man out in handcuffs, while other officers wearing blue jeans with black jackets, balaclavas and ball caps entered carrying satchels and cardboard boxes.

Two unmarked black police vehicles were parked outside.

The store’s “Open” sign remained lit in the window but blinds obscured any activity inside.

Police have warned they are investigating the shops, and on Friday they moved in.

The dispensaries are illegal, but hundreds of them have opened across Canada, emboldened by the federal government’s promise to legalize recreational pot. Medical marijuana is already legal, but not if sold from stores.

Wee Medical is one of seven dispensaries that have been opened in Ottawa since July by a B.C.-based chain that also operates stores called Green Tree and CannaGreen. One of the CannaGreen outlets was closed earlier this week after the landlord evicted the dispensary. Ottawa police have sent letters to landlords of dispensaries warning them about the consequences of allowing illegal activity on their properties.

The Rideau Street Wee Medical shop is one of the busier dispensaries in the city. When the Citizen visited the shop recently, customers included a few University of Ottawa students who were recreational pot users and a man with HIV buying cannabis gummy bears to ease nausea. The small shop is sparse, containing little more than a case of dried weed and cannabis-laced cookies, candy and pop, and an ATM.
